Solid wood rectangular coffee table with pedestal base, 48 inches long

Coffee Table Size Guide: Length, Height and Distance

Quick answer: pick a coffee table about two-thirds the length of your sofa, 16 to 18 inches high (or 1 to 2 inches lower than the sofa seat), and place it 12 to 18 inches from the sofa. Keep about 30 inches of walkway between the table and the TV stand or other furniture. For a 75-inch sofa, that means a table close to 50 inches long.

Below: a coffee table size chart by sofa length, height and width rules, a room-depth check, shapes for small rooms and sectionals, and real prices from our Montréal showroom.

What size coffee table do I need for my sofa?

Use the two-thirds rule. Wayfair, Bob Vila, Castlery and Mobilia all give the same starting point: the table should be about two-thirds of the sofa's overall length.

Formula: sofa length × 2 ÷ 3 = target table length.

  • 60-inch loveseat: 60 × 2 ÷ 3 = 40 inches (Wayfair's example).
  • 75-inch sofa: 75 × 2 ÷ 3 = 50 inches.
  • 84-inch three-seat sofa: 84 × 2 ÷ 3 = 56 inches (Bob Vila's example).

You don't need to hit the number exactly. Castlery gives a range for each sofa size, which helps when the table you like is a few inches off.

How tall should a coffee table be?

The standard coffee table height is 16 to 18 inches (Wayfair, Bob Vila, Mobilia). The better rule is to match your sofa: the top should sit level with the seat cushion or 1 to 2 inches lower. Bob Vila's examples:

Sofa seat height Coffee table height
14 in (low, lounge-style sofa) 12 to 13 in
18 in (standard sofa) 16 to 17 in
22 in (tall sofa) 20 to 21 in

Measure seat height from the floor to the top of the front cushion, without sitting on it. If you eat, work or play board games at the coffee table, Castlery suggests a taller 18 to 22 inch table, or a lift-top model that raises the surface.

How far should a coffee table be from the sofa?

Leave 12 to 18 inches between the sofa's front edge and the table (Wayfair, Bob Vila). Closer than 12 inches and knees hit the table; farther than 18 inches and you can't reach a drink without leaning. Castlery narrows it to 14 to 18 inches; Mobilia allows 18 to 24 inches if you want more legroom. Around armchairs, the same 14 to 18 inches works (Castlery).

On the far side, keep about 30 inches between the table and a TV stand or other furniture so people can walk through (Wayfair, Mobilia).

Will it fit? Check the room depth

Add up the depth of everything from the back wall behind the sofa to the TV wall. Example with an assumed 36-inch-deep sofa, a 24-inch-deep table and a 16-inch-deep TV stand:

36 (sofa) + 18 (gap) + 24 (table) + 30 (walkway) + 16 (TV stand) = 124 inches, or about 10 feet 4 inches.

If your room is shorter, cut from the table first: a narrower or round table, or an ottoman you can push aside, before you squeeze the walkway below 30 inches.

How wide should a coffee table be?

Width (front to back) depends on the room. Castlery's ranges:

  • Small room, under 150 sq ft: 18 to 24 in (45 to 60 cm).
  • Medium room, 150 to 250 sq ft: 24 to 30 in (60 to 75 cm).
  • Large room, over 250 sq ft: 30 to 36 in (75 to 90 cm).

Wayfair also gives a check for the table's footprint across the seating area: measure the open width and subtract 42 to 48 inches for clearance. A 100-inch opening minus 48 gives a 52-inch maximum.

Which coffee table shape works best?

Shape Best for Watch out for
Rectangle Long sofas, long or narrow rooms, the gap of an L-shaped sectional Corners in tight walkways
Round Small rooms, homes with young children (no corners) Holds less than a rectangle of the same length
Oval Small rooms where you still want length Measure the long axis against the two-thirds rule
Square Large rooms, between U- or L-shaped sectionals Check the width against the room-size ranges

Shape advice from Wayfair, Castlery and Mobilia. In small rooms, Wayfair and Castlery prefer round or oval because traffic flows around them; Mobilia prefers a slim rectangle. Both work if you keep the 12 to 18 inch gap and 30 inch walkway.

What size coffee table for a sectional?

Measure the longest side and leave out the corner seat (Mobilia), then apply two-thirds. For sectionals 94 inches and up, Castlery suggests 47 to 63 inches, or two nesting tables you can split. A square or large rectangle sits well in the corner of an L, and deeper tops suit sectionals with a chaise. Not sure which seating to buy first? Read sectional vs sofa, then come back to size the table.

Coffee table size in 5 steps

  1. Measure the sofa length and multiply by 2 ÷ 3.
  2. Measure the seat height and subtract 0 to 2 inches for the table height.
  3. Measure the room depth and check sofa + 12 to 18 in gap + table + 30 in walkway + TV stand.
  4. Pick the width from the room size: 18 to 24, 24 to 30 or 30 to 36 inches.
  5. Pick the shape: round or oval for tight rooms, rectangle for long sofas, square for big sectionals.

FAQ: coffee table size

What size coffee table do I need for my sofa?

About two-thirds of the sofa's length. A 75-inch sofa takes a table near 50 inches, and an 84-inch sofa a table near 56 inches.

How tall should a coffee table be?

Most coffee tables are 16 to 18 inches high. Choose one level with your sofa seat or 1 to 2 inches lower, so a sofa with an 18-inch seat pairs with a 16 to 17 inch table.

How far should a coffee table be from the couch?

Leave 12 to 18 inches between the sofa and the coffee table. Keep about 30 inches between the table and the TV stand or other furniture for walking.

What size coffee table for a sectional?

Measure the longest side without the corner seat and take about two-thirds. For sectionals 94 inches and longer, a table of 47 to 63 inches or two nesting tables works.

What coffee table shape is best for a small living room?

Round or oval tables let people walk around them more easily in tight rooms. A slim rectangle 18 to 24 inches wide also works if you keep a 30-inch walkway.

Can a coffee table be too big?

Yes. If it leaves less than 12 inches to the sofa or less than 30 inches of walkway, or runs longer than the two-thirds range for your sofa, it is too big for the room.
