Aménagement d'entrée pour l'hiver à Montréal : guide pratique
Quick answer: for a well-organized winter entryway, plan for four zones in the order you enter: a scraper mat outside, an absorbent mat and a boot tray just inside the door, a bench for sitting (seat height of about 18 in, or 46 cm), then hooks and bins for coats, hats, and mittens. The goal: keep water and salt within the first two meters and away from the wood flooring.
In Montreal, the entrance of a plex or condo is often a narrow corridor. This guide provides measurements, the right mats, choosing a bench, and a to-do list before the first snowfall.
Designing a winter entryway: the 4 zones
Think in zones, from the door inward. Each zone has a single task.
- Outside: a scraper mat removes snow and most of the salt before entering.
- Wet zone: an absorbent mat and a boot tray, just behind the door, outside its swing radius.
- Seating: a bench to remove boots without leaning against the wall.
- Storage: hooks for coats, one bin per person for hats and mittens, and a mirror near the door.
Which entryway mat should you choose for snow and salt?
You need two, not one. Quebec-based flooring manufacturer Mercier recommends in its maintenance guide to use "mats at each entrance door to collect water and snow," and reminds us that "abrasives are a direct threat to your floors." Sand and abrasives that stick to soles scratch the varnish.
| Scraper mat (outside or vestibule) | Absorbent mat (inside) | |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Scrape off snow, sand, and salt | Absorb remaining water under soles |
| Material | Rubber, textured surface | Synthetic fiber, non-slip backing |
| Size | At least the width of the door | Long enough for two full steps |
| Maintenance | Shake, hose off | Vacuum, wash, or air dry flat |
Store example as of October 11, 2026: a 30 × 48 in rubber outdoor mat, with non-slip backing, designed to trap dirt and snow, at $91.99 instead of $112.99. See our entrance mats. For a long hallway, a synthetic fiber runner rug takes over after the wet zone.
Wipe up water on the floor immediately: Mercier advises to "wipe up any water spills without delay." A water-soaked mat left on the floor for several days traps moisture against the wood.
Where to put wet boots?
On a tray with a rim, never directly on wood or carpet. Some rules:
- Measure before buying: place the whole household's boots side-by-side and measure the total width. The tray must hold them without them spilling onto the floor.
- Empty and wipe the tray often. Salt water drying leaves a white residue.
- Let them dry, don't let them soak. According to Health Canada, "mould can grow in areas of excessive moisture within 48 hours." Health Canada also recommends asking occupants and guests to remove their shoes at the entrance.
- Monitor house humidity. Health Canada recommends a relative humidity level between 30 and 50%. For wood floors, Mercier suggests aiming for 45% at about 20°C. A hygrometer near the entrance will tell you the level.
Which entryway bench should you choose?
A bench is used for sitting to remove boots, and often for storage. Three measurements matter: seat height, depth, and weight capacity.
- Seat height: around 18 in (about 46 cm), like a chair. The benches in stock below range from 18 to 19.3 in.
- Depth: in a narrow corridor, every centimeter counts. Example: a 100 cm hallway with a 35 cm deep bench leaves 100 - 35 = 65 cm to walk through.
- Material: wood, metal, or faux leather are easy to wipe clean. Pale linen fabric does not handle wet snow pants well: keep it for a dry entrance or a bedroom.
| Bench in stock (Oct 11, 2026) | Dimensions | Weight capacity | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rustic shoe bench, 2 doors, cushion | 100.1 × 35.1 × 49 cm (19.3 in seat) | 150 kg | $126 (instead of $245.96) |
| VASAGLE storage bench | 100 × 40 × 46 cm | 136 kg on top, 60 kg inside | $132.99 (instead of $189.99) |
| Odette bench, solid acacia and metal | 50 × 16 × 18 in | 300 lbs | $370.99 (instead of $519.99) |
| Upholstered linen bench | 57.88 × 18.5 × 18.5 in | 250 lbs | $475 (instead of $650) |

Where to store coats, hats, and mittens?
- Hooks rather than hangers: a wet coat dries better on a hook, in the air, than crammed in a closed closet.
- One bin per person: for hats, mittens, and neck warmers. Children can find their things, and nothing ends up on the bench.
- Children's hooks lower, at their reach, so they can dress themselves.
- A mirror near the door for a final check before heading out. See our mirrors.
- A storage bench for seasonal accessories: sandals in winter, hats in summer.
How to stop drafts in the entryway?
A cold entrance is often a poorly sealed door. The Government of Quebec explains, on its page regarding energy performance of doors and windows, that "a well-installed weatherstrip blocks drafts." Their tips:
- Tighten hinge screws before installing weatherstripping.
- Install it so that the door closes securely and compresses the strip without forcing.
- For the threshold, place a door sweep on the threshold or on the door itself.
- Never paint weatherstripping: it loses its elasticity.
The same page specifies that the problem often comes from how the door was installed, not the door itself.
Organizing a small 3½ or 4½ entrance
In many Montreal apartments, the entrance is a sliver of a hallway. Focus on height and dual-purpose furniture:
- Enclosed shoe bench: you can sit on it, and summer shoes disappear behind the doors.
- Wall hooks at two heights instead of a standing coat rack that takes up floor space.
- A runner rug instead of several small mats that slide. Measure the length of the hallway and leave some floor visible at each end.
- Door clearance first: nothing in the swing radius, otherwise the door will hit the boot tray every time you enter.

Buying entryway furniture open box
Benches, mirrors, and mats are great open box buys: few moving parts, and the condition can be checked in two minutes. In-store, sit on the bench, open the doors or lid, and check that the hinges hold. Our complete open box guide and our FAQ explain conditions and returns.
Frequently asked questions
How to organize an entrance for winter?
Divide the entrance into four zones: a scraper mat outside, an absorbent mat and boot tray behind the door, a bench for sitting, then hooks and bins for clothing. This keeps water and salt near the door.
Which mat should I put in the entrance for winter?
Two mats: a rubber scraper mat outside or in the vestibule, and a non-slip absorbent mat inside. The first removes snow and abrasives, the second captures remaining water.
What is the best height for an entryway bench?
Aim for a seat height of about 18 in (46 cm), like a chair. The benches we had in stock on October 11, 2026, ranged from 18 to 19.3 in.
How to protect wood flooring from salt and snow?
Use mats at every door, place boots on a rimmed tray, and wipe up water immediately. The manufacturer Mercier also recommends maintaining about 45% relative humidity and 20°C for wood floors.
What should the humidity level be in the house during winter?
Health Canada recommends a relative humidity level between 30 and 50%. An inexpensive hygrometer allows you to check this.
