Chandelier Size Guide: Diameter, Height and Formulas
Quick answer: for chandelier size, add the room's length and width in feet; the total is the diameter in inches (a 12 × 14 ft room takes a 26-inch chandelier). Over a dining table, pick a chandelier one-half to two-thirds the table's width and hang it 30 to 36 inches above the top on an 8-foot ceiling. In a foyer or open room, keep the bottom at least 7 feet off the floor.
Below: the formulas, a size chart, hanging heights by ceiling, foyer and two-storey rules, and how many lumens you need.
How do you calculate chandelier size?
Use the room formula from Kichler's chandelier planning guide and Lighting New York:
Room length (ft) + room width (ft) = chandelier diameter (in).
Kichler treats the result as a minimum diameter, so round up rather than down when you fall between two sizes.
Chandelier size chart by room
| Room size | Calculation | Chandelier diameter |
|---|---|---|
| 10 × 10 ft | 10 + 10 | 20 in (51 cm) |
| 10 × 12 ft | 10 + 12 | 22 in (56 cm) |
| 12 × 14 ft | 12 + 14 | 26 in (66 cm) |
| 14 × 16 ft | 14 + 16 | 30 in (76 cm) |
| 15 × 20 ft | 15 + 20 | 35 in (89 cm) |
Conversions: 1 in = 2.54 cm, rounded.
How tall should the chandelier be?
Allow 2.5 to 3 inches of fixture height for each foot of ceiling height (Lighting New York). That gives:
- 8 ft ceiling: 8 × 2.5 to 8 × 3 = 20 to 24 in tall.
- 9 ft ceiling: 22.5 to 27 in tall.
- 10 ft ceiling: 25 to 30 in tall.
- 18 ft two-storey foyer: 45 to 54 in tall.
What size chandelier for a dining room?
Size it to the table, not the room. The chandelier should be one-half to two-thirds the table's width, according to Lighting New York and Golden Lighting. For round tables, Golden Lighting suggests 50% to 75% of the diameter. Golden Lighting also notes a simpler shortcut some guides use: about 12 inches narrower than the table.
| Table | Chandelier diameter (½ to ⅔) | Linear fixture length (⅓ to ½) |
|---|---|---|
| 36 in wide / 60 in long | 18 to 24 in | 20 to 30 in |
| 42 in wide / 72 in long | 21 to 28 in | 24 to 36 in |
| 48 in wide / 84 in long | 24 to 32 in | 28 to 42 in |
| 48 in round | 24 to 36 in (50% to 75%) | Use a round fixture |
Round chandelier or linear chandelier?
For a long rectangular table, a linear chandelier lights both ends. Kichler sets its length at one-third to one-half the table length: a 72-inch table takes a 24- to 36-inch linear fixture. Golden Lighting suggests three or more pendants in a row as an alternative. Round and square tables look best under a round or drum chandelier.
How high should a chandelier hang over a dining table?
Hang the bottom of the chandelier 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop on an 8-foot ceiling. For each extra foot of ceiling, add about 3 inches (Golden Lighting):
| Ceiling height | Bottom of chandelier above table |
|---|---|
| 8 ft | 30 to 36 in |
| 9 ft | 33 to 39 in |
| 10 ft | 36 to 42 in |
Test it seated: if the fixture blocks eye contact across the table, raise it. Most chandeliers adjust by removing chain links or cutting the downrod; plan the length before installation, since the canopy must still cover the electrical box.
What size chandelier for a foyer or entryway?
Use the room formula. A 10 × 12 ft foyer takes a 22-inch chandelier. With an 8-foot ceiling, the bottom should sit about 7 feet (about 2.1 m) above the floor so people walk under it freely (Lighting New York). Kichler sets 7 feet as the minimum for any foyer or great room.
Two-storey foyers
- Height: 2.5 to 3 inches per foot of ceiling, so an 18 ft ceiling takes a 45- to 54-inch-tall fixture.
- Position: centre it on the front door or staircase so it reads from both floors.
- Maintenance: a high fixture is hard to reach. Choose long-life LED bulbs or integrated LED.
What size chandelier for a living room or bedroom?
Same room formula. A 14 × 16 ft bedroom takes a 30-inch fixture. Keep the bottom at least 7 feet above the floor in any walk-through space. Over a bed, the fixture can be centred on the bed rather than the room, but still respect the 7-foot clearance (Lighting New York). With an 8-foot ceiling, that leaves only 12 inches for chain, canopy and fixture together, so choose a semi-flush or compact drum style.
In an open-plan condo, size each fixture to its zone: measure the dining area alone, not the whole room. Pairing a dining chandelier with a correctly sized rug helps define the zone; see our rug size guide for the dining table rule.

How many lumens does a chandelier need?
Size is about scale; lumens are about light. The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) suggests 10 to 20 footcandles for a dining room, according to Kichler. Multiply by the floor area:
12 × 15 ft = 180 sq ft. 180 × 10 = 1,800 lumens; 180 × 20 = 3,600 lumens.
Golden Lighting's summary of ANSI/IES RP-11 gives lower targets on the table itself: about 5 footcandles for formal dining, 10 for everyday meals and 20 when the table doubles as a desk. One footcandle is about 10.8 lux.
- Colour temperature: 2700K to 3000K (warm white) for dining and living rooms, per the same Golden Lighting summary.
- Dimmer: install one. It covers formal dinners at 5 footcandles and homework at 20 with the same fixture. Check that the bulbs or integrated LED are labelled dimmable.
- Count the bulbs: a 6-light chandelier with 450-lumen bulbs gives 6 × 450 = 2,700 lumens, inside the 1,800 to 3,600 range for a 180 sq ft room.
Chandelier sizing checklist
- Measure the room (or the zone) and add length + width for the diameter.
- Measure the table if there is one: ½ to ⅔ of its width wins over the room formula.
- Measure the ceiling for fixture height (2.5 to 3 in per foot) and drop.
- Set the drop: 30 to 36 in above the table at 8 ft, +3 in per extra foot; 7 ft minimum over walkways.
- Check light output: 10 to 20 footcandles × floor area for a dining room, on a dimmer, at 2700K to 3000K.

Chandelier size FAQ
What size chandelier do I need for my room?
Add the room's length and width in feet; the total is the chandelier diameter in inches. A 12 × 14 ft room takes a 26-inch chandelier.
What size chandelier for a 48-inch dining table?
Choose a chandelier one-half to two-thirds the table's width: 24 to 32 inches for a 48-inch-wide table. For a 48-inch round table, 50% to 75% of the diameter (24 to 36 inches) also works.
How high should a chandelier hang above a dining table?
Hang the bottom 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop on an 8-foot ceiling. Add about 3 inches for each extra foot of ceiling height.
How low can a chandelier hang in a foyer or living room?
Keep the bottom of the chandelier at least 7 feet above the floor in any area people walk through.
How tall should a chandelier be for a two-storey foyer?
Allow 2.5 to 3 inches of fixture height per foot of ceiling. An 18-foot ceiling takes a chandelier 45 to 54 inches tall.
How many lumens does a dining room chandelier need?
Multiply the floor area by 10 to 20 footcandles, the IES range cited by Kichler. A 180 sq ft dining room needs about 1,800 to 3,600 lumens, ideally on a dimmer.
