8x10 area rug sized for a living room with a 7-foot sofa

What Size Rug Do You Need? Living Room, Bedroom and Dining Room Guide

Quick answer: for most living rooms with a 7-foot (84 in) sofa, an 8×10 rug is the right size: it lets the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug. Under a queen bed, choose 8×10; under a king, 9×12; under a dining table, choose a rug about 24 inches larger than the table on every side so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.

A rug that is too small is one of the most common decorating mistakes: it floats in the middle of the room and makes the furniture look disconnected. This guide gives you the measurements for each room, a standard size chart in inches and centimetres, and a simple way to test a size at home before you buy.

Standard rug sizes (inches and centimetres)

Rug sizes are sold in feet. Exact dimensions vary a few inches by brand (for example 7'6" × 9'6" or 6'7" × 9'), so always check the listing.

Size (ft) Approx. cm Typical use
3 × 5 91 × 152 Entry, beside a bed, under a desk chair
4 × 6 122 × 183 Small entry, reading corner, kids' play area
5 × 8 152 × 244 Small living room, under a coffee table, twin bed
6 × 9 183 × 274 Apartment living room, double bed, small dining table
8 × 10 244 × 305 Most living rooms, queen bed, dining table for 6
9 × 12 274 × 366 Large living room, king bed, dining table for 8
8 ft round 244 diameter Round dining table up to about 48 in

In our current stock, 8×10 is by far the most common size: 23 of the 42 rugs listed in our 5×8, 6×9, 7×9 and 8×10 collections are 8×10. That is not an accident: it is the size that fits the most rooms.

What size rug for a living room?

Choose the rug from your seating, not from the room. There are three ways to place a living room rug:

Three living room rug layouts Left: all furniture legs on the rug. Middle: only the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug. Right: a small floating rug under the coffee table only. All legs on9×12 or larger · large rooms Front legs on8×10 · most living rooms Floating5×8 · small rooms only
Sofa and chairs in dark grey, coffee table in tan, rug in beige.
  • Front legs on (best for most rooms): the front legs of the sofa and chairs rest on the rug, the back legs on the floor. The rug should be at least 6 inches wider than the sofa on each side. With an 84 in sofa, that means at least 96 in, so an 8×10.
  • All legs on: every piece sits fully on the rug. This works in large or open-plan rooms and usually needs a 9×12 or larger.
  • Floating: the rug sits only under the coffee table. This is the only layout where a 5×8 works in a living room, and it suits small rooms or a loveseat.

Leave bare floor between the rug and the walls: about 8 inches in a small room and 12 to 18 inches in a larger one. If the rug touches the walls, it reads as wall-to-wall carpet.

Sofa length Recommended rug
Loveseat, up to 60 in 5×8 (floating) or 6×9
72 in sofa 6×9 or 8×10
84 in sofa (7 ft) 8×10
90 in sofa or sectional 9×12

What size rug under a queen, king or double bed?

Under a bed, the goal is a soft landing when you get up: aim for 18 to 24 inches of rug visible on each side of the bed. The rug usually starts just in front of the nightstands and runs past the foot of the bed, placed with its long side across the bed.

Bed (mattress width) Rug Rug visible on each side
Twin (39 in) 5×8 about 28 in
Double (54 in) 6×9 about 27 in
Queen (60 in) 8×10 about 30 in
King (76 in) 9×12 (or 8×10 for a tighter fit) about 34 in (22 in with 8×10)

The numbers are simple arithmetic: subtract the mattress width from the rug's long side and divide by two. Your bed frame may be a few inches wider than the mattress, so measure the frame.

In a small bedroom where a big rug won't fit, two 2'6" runners on either side of the bed do the same job. See our runner size guide.

What size rug under a dining table?

Measure the table and add 24 inches on every side (30 inches if your chairs are large). That keeps the back legs of the chairs on the rug when someone sits down.

Table Minimum rug Common size
Round, 42–48 in 90–96 in round 8 ft round
Rectangle 36 × 60 in (4 seats) 84 × 108 in 8×10
Rectangle 40 × 72 in (6 seats) 88 × 120 in 8×10
Rectangle 42 × 84 in (8 seats) 90 × 132 in 9×12

Match the shape: a round table looks best on a round or square rug, a long table on a rectangle. For dining areas, a low pile or flat-woven rug is easier to clean and lets chairs slide.

How to test a rug size before you buy

  1. Measure your sofa, bed or table and write the numbers down.
  2. Mark the rug's outline on the floor with painter's tape.
  3. Walk around it, pull out the dining chairs, open the doors. Check that door swings and floor vents are clear.
  4. Take a photo of the taped area. It makes the decision easier when you compare rugs in store.

Every rug in our warehouse at 433 Rue Chabanel O can be seen in person before you pay, so bring your measurements and compare with the real thing.

Rug size FAQ

Is a 5×8 rug too small for a living room?

For most living rooms, yes. A 5×8 only works in the floating layout, under the coffee table, in a small room or with a loveseat. With a standard 84 in sofa, choose an 8×10.

Is 8×10 or 9×12 better for a living room?

8×10 fits most living rooms with the front-legs-on layout. Choose 9×12 if your sofa is 90 inches or longer, you have a sectional, or you want all the furniture fully on the rug.

What size rug goes under a queen bed?

An 8×10 placed with the 10-foot side across the bed leaves about 30 inches of rug on each side of a queen mattress.

What size rug goes under a king bed?

A 9×12 leaves about 34 inches on each side of a king mattress. An 8×10 also works and leaves about 22 inches per side.

How much bigger than the dining table should the rug be?

At least 24 inches on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. A 48 in round table needs an 8 ft round rug.

How far should a rug be from the wall?

Leave about 8 inches of floor in a small room and 12 to 18 inches in a large room.
