Pendant Lights Over Island: How Many, Spacing and Height
Quick answer: for pendant lights over an island, divide the island length by the number of pendants and centre one in each segment. Keep centres 24 to 30 inches apart and the outer pendants at least 6 inches from each end. Most islands take two pendants (4 to 5 ft) or three (6 to 7 ft). Hang the bottom of each shade 30 to 36 inches above the countertop.
Below: a count chart by island length, the spacing method, height, pendant size, lumens and dimmers.
How many pendant lights over a kitchen island?
Island length decides the count. Lighting Reimagined gives these starting points, and Artika adds that the pendants should cover about two-thirds of the island's length:
- 4 to 5 ft island: two medium pendants, or one statement fixture.
- 6 to 7 ft island: three medium pendants, or two large ones.
- 8 to 10 ft island: three large pendants, or one linear fixture.
Lighting Reimagined generally prefers odd counts for symmetry, but two pendants are standard on short islands. The real test is spacing: if the result falls outside 24 to 30 inches between centres, change the count or the pendant size.
How far apart should pendant lights be over an island?
Use the equal-segment method. It always centres the group and keeps the ends balanced:
- Spacing = island length ÷ number of pendants.
- First centre = half the spacing from the end.
- Check: spacing 24 to 30 in, and the first centre at least 6 in from the end (Artika).
Example: a 72-inch island with three pendants. 72 ÷ 3 = 24 in spacing. The first centre sits 24 ÷ 2 = 12 in from the end, so the centres land at 12, 36 and 60 inches. That matches the layout in the Lighting Reimagined guide.
Pendant spacing chart by island length
| Island length | Pendants | Spacing (length ÷ count) | Centre to end | Fits the rule? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 48 in (4 ft) | 2 | 24 in | 12 in | Yes |
| 60 in (5 ft) | 2 | 30 in | 15 in | Yes |
| 72 in (6 ft) | 3 | 24 in | 12 in | Yes |
| 84 in (7 ft) | 3 | 28 in | 14 in | Yes |
| 96 in (8 ft) | 3 | 32 in | 16 in | Only with large pendants |
| 96 in (8 ft) | 4 | 24 in | 12 in | Yes |
| 120 in (10 ft) | 4 | 30 in | 15 in | Yes |
Conversions: 1 ft = 12 in; 72 in is about 183 cm.
What if the electrical box is off-centre?
Plan the spacing from the island, not from the existing box. Options: a multi-light pendant on one canopy, a linear fixture with a wide canopy, or new boxes placed on your measured centres. Moving or adding boxes is wiring work; our guide on who can install a light fixture in Québec (in French) explains when you need a master electrician.
How high should pendant lights hang over an island?
Hang the bottom of each pendant 30 to 36 inches above the countertop, measured from the lowest point of the shade (Artika, Lighting Reimagined). On a standard 36-inch counter, that puts the bottom 36 + 30 = 66 to 36 + 36 = 72 inches above the floor.
- 30 to 32 in: more light on the work surface; good for prep-heavy kitchens.
- 34 to 36 in: keeps sightlines open across the island; better if tall people use the kitchen.
- High ceilings: Artika's ranges assume 8 to 9 ft ceilings. Above that, stay in the 30 to 36 in range above the counter and use a longer downrod or cord; check the maximum length on the spec sheet before you buy.
What size pendant lights for a kitchen island?
Most island pendants are 12 to 18 inches in diameter (Artika). Check the gap between shades: spacing minus diameter.
- 18-in pendants on 24-in centres: 24 − 18 = 6 in of air between shades.
- 12-in pendants on 24-in centres: 12 in between shades.
- Clear glass looks lighter than solid metal, so a glass shade can run a little larger without crowding the island (Lighting Reimagined).
Smaller globes (9 to 11 in) suit narrow islands or a row of four. Example from our floor on October 17, 2026: a chrome globe pendant 10.5 in wide, with 3 units in stock at $218.00 each (regular $312.00), enough for a three-pendant row: 3 × $218.00 = $654.00.
Pendants or a linear fixture?
| Separate pendants | One linear fixture | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Islands 4 to 7 ft | Islands 8 to 10 ft, or one off-centre box |
| Electrical boxes | One per pendant (or a multi-light canopy) | Usually one |
| Light spread | Pools of light at each pendant | Even line along the island |
| Height adjustment | Each cord or rod set separately | Set once, must hang level |
Linear chandeliers sold for dining tables also work over islands; our chandelier size guide covers linear fixture lengths, and you can compare styles in the chandelier collection.

How many lumens do island pendants need?
Target about 35 to 50 lumens per square foot of island surface (Lighting Reimagined). Example: a 72 × 36 in island is 6 × 3 = 18 sq ft. 18 × 35 = 630 lumens; 18 × 50 = 900 lumens, split across all the pendants.
- Colour temperature: 2700K to 3000K warm white, the same in every fixture in the room (Lighting Reimagined).
- Shade type: open-bottom or downlight shades put light on the counter; diffused or shaded pendants suit entertaining, paired with under-cabinet task lights.
- Dimmer: put the pendants on their own dimmer. Integrated LED pendants often need an ELV (trailing-edge) dimmer, which is usually sold separately.
Kitchen island pendant checklist
- Measure the island length and pick a count from the chart.
- Divide the length by the count for spacing; confirm 24 to 30 in and at least 6 in from each end.
- Choose the diameter, usually 12 to 18 in, and check the gap between shades.
- Set the height: bottom of shade 30 to 36 in above the countertop.
- Check light: 35 to 50 lumens per sq ft, 2700K to 3000K, on a dimmer.
Then pick seating that fits the counter height. Our bar and counter stools list seat heights in the product titles.

Buying open-box pendant lights
Buying a matched set is the main challenge with open-box lighting: check that the quantity in stock covers your count. Inspect each shade for chips, confirm the canopy, mounting strap and screws are in the box, and measure the cord or downrod against your ceiling height. Our open-box FAQ explains condition and returns. More fixtures are in the full lighting collection.
Pendant lights over island FAQ
How many pendant lights over a 6-foot island?
Three. A 72-inch island divided by three gives 24-inch spacing, with each outer pendant 12 inches from the end. Two larger pendants also work if you prefer fewer fixtures.
How far apart should pendant lights be over an island?
Space pendant centres 24 to 30 inches apart. Keep each outer pendant at least 6 inches, and ideally 6 to 12 inches, from the end of the island.
How high should pendant lights hang over a kitchen island?
Hang the bottom of each pendant 30 to 36 inches above the countertop. On a standard 36-inch counter that is 66 to 72 inches above the floor.
What size pendant lights for a kitchen island?
Most island pendants are 12 to 18 inches wide. Leave at least a few inches of air between shades: two 18-inch pendants on 24-inch centres leave a 6-inch gap.
Should kitchen island pendants be dimmable?
Yes. A dimmer lets the same pendants give bright prep light and soft evening light. Integrated LED pendants often need an ELV (trailing-edge) dimmer, so check the spec sheet.
What colour temperature for island pendants?
Use 2700K to 3000K warm white, and keep every bulb in the kitchen at the same colour temperature.
