Runner Rug Size Guide: Hallways, Kitchens and Stairs

Quick answer: most runner rugs are 2 to 3 ft wide and 6 to 14 ft long. Pick a runner size by subtracting 3 in of floor on each side in a narrow hallway (6 to 8 in in a wider one) and making it about 12 in shorter than the hallway. In a kitchen, 2×5, 2×7 or 2×10 covers most counter runs. On stairs, the runner must be narrower than the treads, and each step uses roughly tread depth + riser height in length.

Below: a runner rug size chart, the measuring rules for hallways, kitchens, entries and stairs, and worked examples you can copy with your own tape measure.

What are standard runner rug sizes?

Runners usually come 2 to 3 ft wide and 6 to 14 ft long in hallways, according to Chairish's runner guide. Rug maker Well Woven lists 2 ft and 3 ft as the most common widths, with popular lengths of 5, 7, 10, 12 and 25 ft. Many brands also sell 2'6" and 2'7" widths, which sit between the two.

Space Typical runner sizes Floor to leave
Narrow hallway 2'×6' to 2'×10' About 3 in each side
Wider hallway 2'6"×8' to 3'×12' 6–8 in each side; about 12 in shorter than the hall
Kitchen 2'×5', 2'×7', 2'×10' Clear of oven and dishwasher doors
Entryway 3'×6', 3'×8' Clear of the door swing
Double bathroom vanity 2'×6' to 2'×8' 8 ft is usually enough length (Chairish)
Stairs 2' to 2'6" wide, length by calculation Wood visible on both sides of each tread

Sizes in the table come from Well Woven and Chairish. Widths are not fully standard: our own runner stock is labelled 2'6", 2'7" and 2'8" wide, so check the label against your measurement.

What size runner for a hallway?

Width: hallway width minus the border

Measure the hallway wall to wall at its narrowest point, including any radiator or baseboard heater. Then subtract the floor border you want on both sides. Well Woven suggests about 3 in between runner and wall in narrow hallways and 6 to 8 in in wider ones.

Hallway width With 3 in each side With 6–8 in each side Runner width to buy
36 in (3 ft) 30 in 20–24 in 2' to 2'6"
42 in (3'6") 36 in 26–30 in 2'2" to 2'6"
48 in (4 ft) 42 in 32–36 in 2'8" to 3'

Arithmetic: 42 − (2 × 6) = 30 in, and 42 − (2 × 8) = 26 in. In a 42 in hallway, a 2'6" (30 in) runner leaves 6 in on each side.

Length: about 12 in shorter than the hallway

Well Woven's rule of thumb is a runner about 12 in (1 ft) shorter than the hallway. Two checks before you buy:

  • Doors: the runner should stop before any door swing, and a thick pile can stop a door from opening, as Chairish warns. A low pile is safer near doors.
  • Standard lengths: pick the nearest standard length below your target, not above. Example: a 14 ft hallway gives a 13 ft target, so buy a 12 ft runner and you get 12 in of floor at each end.
Hallway runner sizing example Top view of a hallway 42 inches wide and 14 feet long. A runner 2 feet 6 inches wide (30 inches) and 12 feet long sits in the middle, leaving 6 inches of floor on each side and 12 inches at each end. Formula: runner width equals hallway width minus 2 times the border; runner length is about 12 inches shorter than the hallway. Hallway runner: worked example Runner 2'6" × 12' (30 in wide) Hallway length 14 ft 42 in 6 in 6 in 12 in 12 in Width = hallway width − 2 × border (3 in narrow, 6–8 in wide) Length = about 12 in shorter than the hallway, rounded down to a standard size
Example: a 42 in × 14 ft hallway takes a 2'6" × 12' runner. Rules from Well Woven's runner guide.

What size runner for a kitchen?

Well Woven recommends narrow, short runners for kitchens: 2×5, 2×7 or 2×10. Choose the length by the counter run you stand at most:

  • Sink only: 2×5 or 2×7 in front of the sink and dishwasher zone.
  • Galley kitchen: one 2×10 down the centre, or two shorter runners if a door or island breaks the run.
  • Appliance doors: keep the runner edge out of the oven and dishwasher door path so the door does not catch it.

Fibre matters more here than in a hallway. Polypropylene shrugs off water but attracts grease, so keep it away from the stove (see our polypropylene rug guide). A washable runner is the easiest option in a cooking zone.

What size runner for an entryway?

Entries take wider, shorter runners: 3×6 or 3×8 are standard (Well Woven). In a Montréal winter, the entry runner goes after a rubber scraper mat, not instead of it, and it should be low enough to clear the door. Our doormats handle the first wipe; the runner catches the rest.

What size runner for stairs?

Stair runner width

The runner must be narrower than the stairs so wood shows on both sides. Canada's National Building Code sets a minimum width of 860 mm (about 34 in) for interior stairs in a dwelling, as reproduced in Part 9 of the Vancouver Building By-law, which follows the national code. On a 34 in stair:

  • A 2'3" (27 in) runner leaves (34 − 27) ÷ 2 = 3.5 in on each side.
  • A 2'6" (30 in) runner leaves 2 in on each side.
  • On a 36 in stair, a 2'6" runner leaves 3 in on each side.

Stair runner length

Well Woven's planning estimate is tread depth + riser height for each covered step. The same code tables allow private stairs a rise of 125 to 200 mm and a run of 255 to 355 mm, so steps vary a lot: measure yours.

How to calculate stair runner length Side view of stairs. Each step uses tread depth plus riser height. Example: tread 10 inches (255 millimetres) plus riser 7.9 inches (200 millimetres) equals about 18 inches per step. 13 steps times 18 inches equals 234 inches, or 19.5 feet. Add about 1 foot at the top and 1 foot at the bottom for a total of 21.5 feet, so order at least 22 feet. Stair runner length: worked example Riser 7.9 in Tread 10 in Per step 10 in + 7.9 in ≈ 18 in 13 steps 13 × 18 in = 234 in = 19.5 ft Allowance + about 1 ft top + 1 ft bottom Total 21.5 ft: order 22 ft or more Add landings and turns separately.
Per-step estimate from Well Woven; top and bottom allowance from Chairish. The 255 mm run and 200 mm rise are the code limits used as an example, not your stairs.

How to measure stairs for a runner

  1. Measure one tread and one riser. Tread depth front to back, riser height bottom to top, in inches.
  2. Add them to get the length per step. Include the nosing if the runner wraps under it (a "Hollywood" install uses more than a "waterfall" install that drops straight down).
  3. Multiply by the number of steps the runner covers.
  4. Add about 1 ft at the top and 1 ft at the bottom, as Chairish suggests, plus each landing measured separately.
  5. Measure the narrowest stair width and choose a runner that leaves wood visible on both sides.

A stair runner has to be fixed to every step with stair rods, tacks or staples, usually by an installer. A loose rug on stairs is a trip hazard. Do not use a hallway runner with a rubber backing as a loose stair cover.

Runner rug size mistakes to avoid

  • Too wide: under 3 in of floor per side in a hallway looks like wall-to-wall carpet and the edges curl against baseboards.
  • Too long: a runner that hits a door or bunches at a threshold. Measure the door swing, not just the wall.
  • Several small rugs: three mats in a row slide and leave gaps. One runner reads as one path.
  • No pad: a thin rug pad, cut slightly smaller than the runner, stops sliding and spreads wear.
  • Wrong fibre for the room: wool for a quiet hall, synthetic or washable for kitchens and entries. Our rug cleaning guide covers salt and slush.

Buying a runner open box

On October 12, 2026, our Hallway Runners collection had in-stock runners up to 22 ft long. Two examples that day: a 2'7"×10' grey and ivory oriental runner at $109.99 instead of $159.99 (31% off: 1 − 109.99 ÷ 159.99), and a 2'6"×22' natural-fibre runner at $139.99 instead of $293.89 (52% off), long enough for the 13-step example above. These can sell at any time; the block above shows live stock.

In store, unroll the runner fully and measure it: open-box rugs keep their label size, but rolling can leave ripples that relax after a few days flat. Check the backing for cracks and the edges for loose binding. Our open-box buying guide explains conditions and returns.

Runner rug size FAQ

What is the standard size of a runner rug?

Most runner rugs are 2 to 3 ft wide and 6 to 14 ft long. Common sizes include 2×8, 2'6"×10 and 2'6"×12.

How much floor should show around a hallway runner?

Leave about 3 in of floor on each side in a narrow hallway and 6 to 8 in in a wider one. In a 42 in hallway, a 2'6" runner leaves 6 in per side.

How long should a hallway runner be?

About 12 in shorter than the hallway, rounded down to a standard length, and clear of every door swing.

What size runner rug for a kitchen?

A 2×5 or 2×7 covers the sink zone, and a 2×10 runs the length of most galley kitchens. Keep it out of the oven and dishwasher door path.

How wide should a stair runner be?

Narrower than the stairs so wood shows on both sides. On a 34 in (860 mm) stair, a 2'3" runner leaves 3.5 in per side and a 2'6" runner leaves 2 in.

How do I calculate stair runner length?

Add tread depth and riser height for one step, multiply by the number of steps, then add about 1 ft at the top and 1 ft at the bottom plus any landings. Thirteen 18 in steps need about 21.5 ft.
