U-shaped modular sectional sofa with storage chaise for a large living room

Sectional vs Sofa: Which Is Better for Small and Large Rooms?

Quick answer: pick a sofa if your living room is under about 200 sq ft, has doors or a radiator on several walls, or if you move often. Pick a sectional if the room is 200 sq ft or more, you have a free corner, and four or more people sit together most evenings. The deciding numbers are 24 inches of seat per person and 30 to 36 inches of walkway around whatever you choose.

Sectional vs sofa: what's the real difference?

A sofa is one straight piece, usually with two arms. A sectional is two or more pieces joined at an angle: an L-shape (one corner), a U-shape (two corners) or a sofa with a chaise (a long seat for your legs). That shape changes four things: how many people sit, how much floor it takes, how it gets through the door and how well it follows you to the next apartment.

Factor Sofa Sectional
Typical size One wall; a 72-inch seat run holds 3 people L-shape 95 × 95 in to 120 × 120 in; U-shape 120 × 120 in and up
Seats 2 to 4 L-shape about 4 to 6; U-shape about 6 to 10
Best room size Under 200 sq ft, or formal front rooms 200 sq ft and up, dens, basements, TV rooms

Is a sectional or a sofa better for a small living room?

In most small rooms, a sofa. A sectional takes two walls and adds 34 to 42 inches of depth on each run (Cozey), so the corner it fills is gone for a plant, a lamp or a door swing. A sofa leaves the other walls free and lets you pull in a chair when guests come.

A sectional still works in a small room when three things are true:

  • One wall is long and clear. Cozey's advice for rooms under 200 sq ft is to run the sectional along one wall with a short return.
  • The return is short. A chaise is usually 60 to 70 inches long (Seatcraft). On an 11-foot (132-inch) side wall, a 65-inch chaise leaves 132 − 65 = 67 inches for a doorway or walkway.
  • The width suits the room. Seatcraft suggests an 80 to 95 inch sectional for rooms under 200 sq ft.

Example: an 11 × 14 ft living room is 154 sq ft. That puts you in the under-200 group, so choose a sofa, or a compact sectional no wider than 95 inches with the chaise on the wall away from the entry.

What size sectional for your room?

Room size Sectional width Typical seats Better choice
Under 200 sq ft 80 to 95 in 3 to 4 Sofa, or compact L with short chaise
200 to 350 sq ft 95 to 115 in 4 to 5 Mid-size L-shape
Over 350 sq ft 120 in and up 5 to 10 Large L or U-shape

Room-size bands and seat counts from Seatcraft. Whatever you choose, keep 30 to 36 inches for main walkways, 16 to 18 inches to the coffee table and 24 to 30 inches in front of reclining seats.

Sectional width by living room size Three bars. Under 200 square feet: 80 to 95 inch sectional, 3 to 4 seats, or a sofa. 200 to 350 square feet: 95 to 115 inches, 4 to 5 seats. Over 350 square feet: 120 inches and up, 5 to 10 seats. Keep 30 to 36 inches of walkway and 16 to 18 inches to the coffee table. Sectional width by room size Under 200 sq ft 80–95 in 3–4 seats or choose a sofa 200–350 sq ft 95–115 in 4–5 seats Over 350 sq ft 120 in and up 5–10 Walkway: 30–36 in Coffee table gap: 16–18 in Seat room: 24 in per person (72 in = 3 people)

How many people does a sofa or sectional seat?

Measure the inner seat width, between the arms, not the overall width. Roger + Chris use 24 inches per adult, so 72 inches of seat holds 3 people. On a sectional, the corner seat holds less than a regular cushion, so count it as a partial seat.

  1. Measure the seat run of each side, arm to corner.
  2. Divide each run by 24 and round down.
  3. Add the two results. Count the corner only if the backs are deep enough to lean against.

Example: an 84-inch sofa with 6-inch arms has 84 − 6 − 6 = 72 inches of seat: 72 ÷ 24 = 3 people. The U-shaped sectional in our catalogue is built from 29.2-inch modules (a 29.2 × 29.2 in corner, armless seats and two 53.5-inch chaise or loveseat ends), which is why it seats more people than its 107.5-inch length suggests.

If you host more people than you seat every night, a sofa plus one or two armchairs or a loveseat often beats a sectional: the extra seats move when you need the floor.

Will a sectional fit through the door and up the stairs?

Often more easily than a sofa, because each module is smaller. Montréal walk-ups with tight outdoor stairs are where this matters most. Use the method from the Baer's measuring guide:

  1. Measure the height and width of every door, hallway and stair turn on the way in.
  2. For a sofa, its width must be less than the door height (it goes in on end) and its diagonal depth less than the door width.
  3. For a sectional, do the same check for the largest module only.

Example from our catalogue: the U-shaped sectional's corner module is 29.2 × 29.2 inches and its longest pieces are 53.5 inches. Compare those numbers with your narrowest door before you buy.

Which is easier to live with long term?

  • Moving: Livingetc quotes advice to skip a sectional if you plan to move in the next 5 to 7 years. If you rent and July 1 is a real possibility, a sofa adapts to more rooms.
  • Rearranging: a sofa can float in the middle of the room, face a window or go under a wall-mounted TV. A sectional usually has one good spot.
  • Reconfiguring: modular sectionals let you swap the chaise side or split the pieces into a sofa and a chair in a smaller apartment. Check that the connectors are included and that the chaise side can change.
  • Durability: the frame, foam and fabric checks are the same for both. Our how to choose a sofa guide covers seat depth, foam density and double rubs.
Sectional or sofa: three questions Decision tree. Question 1: is the room 200 square feet or more? No: sofa. Yes: question 2: do 4 or more people sit together most evenings? No: sofa plus a chair. Yes: question 3: do you plan to move in the next 5 to 7 years? Yes: modular sectional. No: sectional. Sectional or sofa? 1. Is the room 200 sq ft or more? No → Sofa 80–95 in max Yes 2. Do 4+ people sit together most evenings? No → Sofa + chair flexible layout Yes 3. Moving in the next 5 to 7 years? Yes → Modular sectional No → Sectional L or U-shape
Room size first, then how many people sit, then how soon you might move.

Sectional vs sofa cost: which is cheaper?

Sofas usually cost less because they use less frame and fabric (Livingetc). Open box narrows that gap. Prices from our catalogue on October 20, 2026, all in stock that day:

  • Futon sectional, 70.5 inches: $300.99 instead of $429.99 (1 − 300.99 ÷ 429.99 = 30% off).
  • 2-seat sofa bed: $429.99 instead of $599.96 (28% off).
  • U-shaped sectional with storage chaise and pull-out bed: $849.99 instead of $3,499.99 (76% off). It is sold with 2 seats missing, which is why the price is so low. Seat depth 20.5 in, seat height 18.1 in, rated 250 lb per seat.

With open box, read the condition note before the price, and check that every connector bracket is in the box for a sectional. Our open-box furniture guide explains condition grades, and the FAQ covers delivery and returns.

Next step after you choose: size the rug so the front legs of the sofa or every module sit on it, using our rug size guide, and pick a colour with what colour rug goes with your sofa.

FAQ: sectional vs sofa

Is a sectional or a sofa better for a small living room?

A sofa, in most rooms under about 200 sq ft. If you want a sectional, keep it to 80 to 95 inches wide, run it along one long wall and keep the chaise short.

How much space do you need for a sectional?

Use the room size as a guide: 80 to 95 inches wide for rooms under 200 sq ft, 95 to 115 inches for 200 to 350 sq ft, and 120 inches or more above 350 sq ft. Keep 30 to 36 inches of walkway and 16 to 18 inches to the coffee table.

How many people fit on a sofa or sectional?

Allow 24 inches of inner seat width per adult, so 72 inches seats 3 people. On a sectional, count each side separately and treat the corner as a partial seat.

Is a sectional harder to move than a sofa?

A sectional comes apart into smaller modules, so it often fits through doors and stairs more easily. It is harder to fit into a new room's layout, so consider a sofa or a modular sectional if you may move in the next 5 to 7 years.

Is a sectional more expensive than a sofa?

Usually, because it uses more frame and fabric. Open box changes the math: in our catalogue a futon sectional was $300.99 and a U-shaped sectional $849.99 on October 20, 2026.
